Shanghai EXPO Pavilion Starts to Take Shape
Shanghai: 3 August 2009

Even in a city that is used to radical architecture and construction projects this national pavilion at the 2010 World EXPO site in Shanghai is starting to stand out. With a ‘moon boat’ shape and surrounded by landscaping and huge water features designed to echo the deserts and seas of this major Middle Eastern state, this ground-breaking pavilion will be one of the star attractions at the EXPO, and (after the China Pavilion) is the second largest individual Country Pavilion at the Expo.
Inside will be a huge 1,600 sq m cinema screen - the largest in the world. And for something a little different 150 date palms, which are common in this desert country, will be planted on the pavilion roof.
'This is a very high profile project for ISG Asia', said Tim Threlkeld, ISG Asia Managing Director for North Asia. 'Not only will this be an amazing showcase, it also demonstrates the skill and professional experience of our Shanghai project team in managing a complex and 'out of the ordinary' construction project.
The pavilion is due for completion by the Chinese New Year, which falls on 14 February in 2010.
The theme of the World EXPO 2010, which will be held from 1 May to 31 October 2010, is 'Better City, Better Life'. 200 countries are participating (48 with their own pavilion) and it will be the biggest World EXPO ever, with more than 70 million visitors expected.
